New Year’s Resolutions: Doing It Right!

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

It’s that time of year again… you know what I’m talking about… the insanity of the holiday planning has come to an end and you are crashing…emotionally and physically.  The past few weeks (or even months perhaps) you have focused on planning for the holidays.  That includes decorations, gifts, planning parties, making plans for how you will spend the holiday, who you will see, making travel arrangements, preparing to take time off from work.  The emotional high you have been on, whether that be from anxiety, stress, or even excitement, has taken a dive.  Some of you may be feeling relieved, and some of you may be feeling sad or disappointed that it’s over for the year.

I like to look at it as a time to reflect and start a new year with a positive outlook.  I’m excited to start fresh…a new beginning.  So there are a million new toys all over the house I have to find a place for and the kids are home all week.  I will find a place for everything and maybe it will even motivate me to reorganize a bit and get rid of some stuff we don’t really need anymore.  And the kids are home for 2 weeks…which makes juggling work and everything else I have to do quite a challenge…but the positive thing is that I’m put in a situation to spend more time with them than life normally allows for.

I try to see the positive in things…even those things that may seem stressful.  I know a lot of people panicing over the toys and the kids being home, and worrying about what the new year will bring.  We can fill our minds with all of these negative thoughts or we can be excited about a new year, a fresh new start, and all of the amazing things we can focus on to bring into our lives.  How you ask?  How do we do that?  This is how:

New Year’s Resolutions:  This is something that everyone attempts to do, but rarely sticks with.  However, it can be really helpful if it’s done right.  Remember to think positive.  Don’t say “I will not eat junk food”, or “I will lose weight”…etc.  Focus your resolutions on more positive thinking.  The mistake most of us make is that our resolutions usually come from negative thoughts. We try and change things about ourselves we perceive as being bad (weight, being messy, procrastinating, smoking, etc) and focusing on negative things usually brings on more negative thoughts.  And if we don’t succeed in getting rid of this “bad habit” we feel like a failure.  Make your resolution something positive.  “I will make my new website a success.”  “I will do something I’ve been wanting to do for some time..”  “I  will make more time for myself/my relationship..etc”   Remember to keep it positive and you will then be focusing more on bringing positive into your life, and less about the negative.  Positive thoughts bring positive outcomes while negative thoughts bring more negative into your life.
